A Bad Friday With Mac The Knife & Dante Knows

On Good Friday, sorry I mean Bad Friday I headed down to Sydney (Marrickville to be precise) to catch my friends in Mac The Knife & Dante Knows perform for the House of Music & Booze’s Bad Friday (Lite) Edition. I caught up with Bryn from Mac The Knife for a couple of cold ones, and we had a quick chat about their upcoming single that will be released in May and their upcoming single launch in Marrickville.

Shout to Dante Knows & The Trouble too for putting on a cracker of a show.

Hey Bryn, How are you man?
B: I’m gooooood my man!

I caught the gig the other night in Sydney for Bad Friday: Lite with Mac The Knife and Dante Knows! Awesome gig, how did that come about and how can you explain your performance for anybody who wasn't there?
B: We’ve been working on shows with the legends at Music and Booze co for years, so when Jack & Dom asked us to jump on board for this year’s Bad Friday, there was no question, we were in! Was a hella fun show, great crowd, great lineup, one for the books for sure!

With the the announcement of Blood Of My Blood single, and release show coming up in May, what can people expect from the single release and the upcoming show?
B: Blood is probably my favourite track of the E.P. It’s definitely our most personal song to date. We’re hoping to find a good home for it to premiere, and then we’ll be launching it May 12th at the Marickville Bowlo with legends DOWNGIRL & Barley Passable. Both of these bands are some of our fav Sydney acts, and the Bowlo is such a uniquely iconic venue, it’s going to be a cracker show!

What else is going on in the world of Mac The Knife?

B: We’ve got some exciting supports coming up which I’m sure you’ll hear about shortly. And we’ll be releasing the music video for “Blood of my Blood” in mid May, followed by our next single: “Curb my Bite”. Then our ep, “In the Shadow of it All” at the end of the year. Things are heating up for the rest of the year!

How would you describe Mac The Knife to somebody that's never heard of you before?

B: Mac is the amalgamation of all its members favorite bands. We all love The Strokes, they are our guiding star, and we’ll never escape their melodies for inspiration. But maybe sprinkle in a bit more Idles. We’ve been playing together since high school, and I think that shows in our live performances. I think after all these years we’re quite in sync, which feels pretty special.

What are the plans for Mac The Knife in 2023?
B: WORLD DOMINATION (in the form of our e.p “In the Shadow of it All”.)

What are your influences for writing new material?
B: definitely a lot of Shame & Fontaines D.C., they are insane. Was also listening to a lot of Eddy Current Suppression Ring when I was writing it, timeless tracks.

What are you listening to atm?
B: the new These New South Wales album, TNSW. It’s PERFECT, front to back. They are on another level.

What's your go drink of choice on a night out in Sydney?
B: Extra dirty Martini

What are your go-to spots in Sydney for a night out?
B: She Loves You for a cocktail, House of Music & Booze for a bevy, & The Imperial for a boogie

What Subculture are you a part of in Sydney, etc Music Community?
B: We all rock climb a fair bit haha, I guess that’s the main one.

We will be attending the release show in May, so we will catch you there! Any last words for readers?
B: yiewwww! GET READY FOR A BARN BURNER, DON’T MISS OUT ON TIX!
