A Quick Chat with Jangle-lofi, Post-punk Band Handmodels

Hand Models, the emerging musical duo from the Central-Coast region, is gearing up for an exciting release as they announce their new single "Twice as Quit," slated to hit the digital airwaves on October 12th. This captivating track promises to resonate with listeners as it delves into the common struggles of financial constraints and unforeseen adversities.

"Twice as Quit" marks a significant milestone for Hand Models as it showcases their unique musical blend and relatable songwriting. The single is the result of a collaboration between the duo's core members: Lachlan Knowles on vocals and lyrics, and Darcy Chaney handling instrumental composition and production.

The genesis of "Twice as Quit" stems from a personal experience that struck a chord with Lachlan Knowles.

"The song 'Twice as Quit' was one of the first songs Darcy and I sat down and wrote together. It was probably about two days after I had to pay about 2k to fix something that went wrong with my car after rear-ending a lecturer's Kia Sportage at the University of Newcastle," shared Knowles. He added, "Adding to that, I was struggling to find a part-time job after I had moved to Newy and barely making enough money to cover rent. I was just so done with scraping by to get through uni, and this song is pretty much about no matter how much you work, save, earn money, limit yourself, or play music to distract yourself...your car still may break down."

The track's poignant lyrics combined with Hand Models' signature sound create a memorable and relatable listening experience. With Lachlan Knowles lending his emotive vocals and Darcy Chaney's skilled production work, "Twice as Quit" promises to capture the audience's attention from the very first note.

The recording of "Twice as Quit" took place at The Brain Studios in Sydney, renowned for its excellent facilities and commitment to producing high-quality music. The single was expertly mixed and mastered by Clayton Segelov, adding a polished finish to the band's creative endeavor.

As the release date approaches, anticipation is building for Hand Models' new single, "Twice as Quit." The band invites fans and music enthusiasts to join them in experiencing this captivating track and connecting with its universal themes.

Formed by frontman Lock Knowles, Hand Models take aim at filling the gap in the Australian music scene with post-punk energy paired with cavernous vocals, screeching guitars and a dense rhythm section led by Mack Hunter and Darcy Chaney. With a stiff goose in their step on stage, they’ve already proven to be a sight for sore eyes through their recent antics all over the Newcastle/Central Coast scene.

We caught up with Handmodels for a quick chat!

What is the meaning behind the band name Hand Models?

This has changed a few times over the years I think. There are two stories the boys and I pedal:

1. The idea came from Seinfeld when George becomes a hand model and burns his hands on an iron.

2. There’s a QOTSA song, "I Was a Teenage Hand Model”.

We always thought it was a fitting name for us anyways. It suited our presentation on stage.

How would you explain Hand Models to somebody that's never heard your music before?

That's tough. I always used to think it would be music to enjoy a sauna too. Someone once said we sounded like "Aggressive Interpol." I always thought that was funny. Another person once said, "Rock and Roll version of the Presets." Probably somewhere in the middle of all of that.

What is the meaning behind the song title, "Twice As Quit"?

We hate paying for our fucking cars.

I've heard through the grapevine you like singing a song or two at karaoke? What's your go-to song and why?

Lachie - Give it away by RHCP.

Darcy - Blood on the Leaves by Kanye.

Mack - Two Tribes by Frankie goes to Hollywood.

Dennis - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by Crash Test Dummies.

What were you listening to collectively as a band when writing the new single?

It's very difficult to remember, but Darcy and I are really into Mahavishnu Orchestra and whether that is obvious or not, they continue to be a massive inspiration for us. Nowhere near it stylistically, but at the time it really opened doors for us creatively. RAED is also huge for Darcy.

What is the best thing to do in Long Jetty?

Drop-shipping products on Shopify from a cafe while you judge peoples deformed French-bulldogs.

How do you spend your downtime outside of working on music?

Two things. Tennis and NRL.

Is there any underlying theme in the meaning behind the new single?

I'll leave that one up to listeners.

Where can we catch you performing next?

West Best Bloc Fest in Newy. That's if Nic doesn't break any more limbs.

If your music was a meal, what meal would it be?

A big plastic container of gravy you take a sip of after the chips are finished and nobody is looking.

Who are 5 artists/bands from your local scene that you want more people to be across?

- Soyboy.

- The Axolotls.

- Catpiss.

- Telurian .

- Ruby Archer.

Bonus points for “Dust" but they are well on their way to be massive and don’t need a shoutout from us.

Any last words?

Harder Than Last Time.
