Catching Up With Kilter

Electronic Producer Kilter recently dropped his first release of 2023 called "High Hopes" via our team at SUBCULTURE?, we have been working on this project for the last 8 months, since his return from Europe and across his previously released Forever and Ever / Breakthru double single project with Brain Flowers (under Etc Etc). We caught up with Kilter today, to have a brief chat about what's going on in his world, and wanted to share it with our readers.

Hey Man, How are you today?

N: Hey! I'm good thanks :)

What are you doing today?

N: I accidentally had like a four day birthday so trying to catch up on my week. Some fiddly mix stuff on a few records, something for a live show… this haha.

Obviously we are loving High Hopes, But explain the song for everybody else reading this right now!
N: I had a lot of fun with this one. I wanted to do a dance record with a simple repeated vocal hook, which is something I haven’t really done too much before, so I decided to treat all the parts of the song like samples and went to town on it. It’s crunchy, thumpy and bouncy.

How did you put the artwork together for this release?
N: @ashleyelacooper! I can’t really remember how it landed where it did but Ash got it most of the way there before I turned up with my rudimentary Photoshop abilities and threw some filters on it.

What's this year look like for Kilter?
N: Excited to follow up my first release of the year with lots of tracks!

What are you listening to atm, that we should get around?
N: Most recent playlists add is Ben Hauke. He is from SE London and makes all of his tunes on an MPC (and plays a pretty sick live set with it too). He has put out some cool stuff recently but I really froth his song from 2021 called NoBol.

What's your go-to spot for Coffee, or Food in your Neighborhood?
N: Often start my day with a walk to Cafe Especial, they do great coffee but more importantly there are always dogs there getting treats and having their polaroids taken for the wall of fame. Avoid on the weekend though as it gets swarmed by dance mums (unless you want to try spot Sydney 2000s Olympic icon Nikki Webster who has a dance studio across the road).

What are you working on atm?
N: My main focus at the moment is mixing and polishing demos. I’ve got so much music basically done just need to grind out the last 20%.

Thanks for your time! Any last words?
N: Go listen to my song.
