Caught up with Eush, who recently returned back from NYC — about living in Australia again ahead of SUBCULTURE? ‘A Very Merry Christmas’

In the vast and ever-evolving landscape of music, where genres intermingle and artistic boundaries blur, eüsh emerges as a captivating force. A musical alchemist, eüsh masterfully weaves together baroque-pop, experimental-rock, alt-country, and enigmatic sea shanties, creating a sonic tapestry that defies easy categorization.

At the heart of eüsh's sonic exploration is a fusion of classic songwriting and avant-garde sound aesthetics. With a profound respect for the abstract, each composition becomes a journey into uncharted territory, an intricate blend of tradition and innovation. The result is a unique musical experience, where meditative vocals seamlessly merge with nebulous harmonies and undulating rhythms, invoking the warm, primitive colors of dusk.

Recently, eüsh unveiled a mesmerizing creation entitled 'Fever Dreams.' This new record serves as a testament to the artist's ability to traverse musical realms, pushing boundaries and challenging expectations. 'Fever Dreams' is a sonic odyssey that invites listeners into a dreamscape where the familiar and the unconventional coalesce in harmony.

Originally rooted in the vibrant musical scene of New York City, eüsh has now returned to the serene landscapes of the Central Coast of New South Wales. This homecoming adds a layer of introspection and regional influence to eüsh's work, creating a dynamic interplay between urban vibrancy and coastal tranquility.

As part of the holiday festivities, eüsh will be gracing the stage at our Christmas show, joined by other noteworthy performers, including Joel Leggett, Dear Darlin (Solo), and Huni. This promises to be an extraordinary musical gathering, where diverse influences converge in a celebration of creativity and sonic exploration.

Hey, How are you today?
Doing great. Had a swim, and a coffee, doing some writing. Very blessed.

Tell our readers about your project?
eüsh is a thing I started out of College, just wanted to start a band and write music inspired by my favourite artists. I've released 5 albums and some singles and have performed in Australia, US and Europe. It's been a way for me to explore songwriting, recording, performing and everything involved with making albums.

What has been your best show to date?
I recently did a eüsh show in New York with one of my musical idols playing in the band. The venue was great, we played great, and it felt great to be supported by someone I admire so much.

What are your influences on writing, recording and releasing music?
My influences come from everywhere, and not just music. I take a lot of inspiration from writers, poets, painters, playwrights ... and just people. With recording and releasing music though it's usually artists from the late 60's to 70's. I feel that people created from a different place back then, that wasn't distorted by any toxic view of celebrity or charts or likes or streams or any of that junk. It was great art, beautifully performed with an honest and pure intention. And releasing music? That's tough ...

What are you looking forward to the most about live music on the central coast?
More of it! It's great to see folks like Subculture waving the flag for local musicians. It's such a geographically beautiful part of the coast, and would be so good to see more of a community develop around music and art that invites everyone to participate. We definitely need more venues and places to play. Not sure what restrictions or hurdles places have to go through these days to be permitted to have live music but I hope it's not too difficult.

What are your plans for 2024?
Keep on keeping on! I'm working on a few film scores. I'm taking a break from writing or releasing anything for eüsh as I did 2 albums in 2 years, and as I like to record and produce my music the old school way, ie analogue, it takes a lot of time, effort and money. I also play in and improvised, experimental ambient group called Yuha Trio that's doing a tour of Japan in October/November. And hopefully recording, mixing, and producing lots of other artists.

With this christmas show around the corner, what are you looking forward to the most?
Meeting some new folks on the Central Coast and hopefully playing some music together.

Top 5: Records of the Year?
1. The most recently released album I've been digging is an album from an experimental ambient duo called The Fun Years and the new album is "realness converts". 2. My friends Bert and Indré have a group called Merope and their most recent album is "Salos". It's a divine collection of Lithuanian Folk tunes set to beautiful Guitars, flutes, synths, percussion and a choir. 3. I've fallen in love with an amazing album called "Gracias a la Vida" by a Chilean singer from the 1950's called Violeta Parra. 4. I discovered an album called "The Gentlemen" by a San Diego, Californian based artist called Kwajbasket. It's what he describes as minimalist ambient guitar music. 5. You know what? ... I'm gonna exercise some ruthless self-promotion and nominate my 5th choice as my own  2023 self-titled release "eush". I recorded this album completely by mistake, or at least without intending to, over a couple days at my friend Ben Haupptmann's house. Ben is a phenomenal guitarist and musician and he happened to have a couple mics already set up and I had some scraps of songs ready so we just did it. Then my friend Evan Mannell put down some drums, and Nic Cassey put down some percussion, with other contributions from lots of other great friends, and without even really thinking about it I had an album. I then mixed and mastered it myself and self-released it on September 29th, 2023.

Any last words?
Nope (except for that one) ... (and those four) ...
