Melbourne Industrial/Alternative Rapper 'glu' returns with his first release of 2023
'MYHOUSEYOURHOUSE' (ft JSPUNCH)
LISTEN HERE
This release has dirty A.I energy, the hypnotizing “My House Is Your House" sample and repetitive four on the floor drums, under layers of industrial guitars and alarm siren synths gives the track a sonic anxiety reflected in the lyrics, this song is living in a space that feels very much like your in a dirty underground club in 2006 in Sydney listening to Crystal Castles or The Prodigy.
Previously he released an EP in 2022 called 'Hot Glu Gun' picking up a spin on Triple J's Home & Hosed, Heat of The Week (Acclaim) and the music video for ONTHEPILL! picked up Wild One via Rage (Video of The Week). The record featured Mista Oof (US rapper), and 454 (US rapper) that has featured on records with Denzel Curry and IDK. More recently he featured on 'Nike On My Shoes' with sydney hyperpop group 'Glass Boys'
Crafted from the depths of the deep web, MYHOUSEYOURHOUSE, the collaboration between alt-rappers JSPUNCH and glu, sounds like a dirty A.I. house party.
JSPUNCH’s growling verses details the uncomfortable claustrophobia one feels being trapped between 4 walls, while glu effortlessly glides over the hooks with self-indulgent bars about being trapped in the monotony of his lifestyle. The party is just another house to be locked in.
Despite them never meeting in person, the blend of PUNCH and glu’s unique brands of rap gives them undeniable chemistry from the jump.
Look out for more tracks from the two on JSPUNCH’s upcoming “Baby Blu” tape.
I sat down with Nelson Blattman aka glu to go over the process behind MYHOUSEYOURHOUSE, the direction and themes of the single, what the lyrical content is about and his process for bringing in JSPUNCH on the track. We also went behind the scenes to talk about the creative process working with Ashley Cooper (Creative Director from SUBCULTURE?) to bring the imagery to life, and the music video edit and delivery.
Hey Nelson aka glu, How are you today?
G: I’m tweaking quitting darts but life’s good
Let's dive in head-first here, tell me about MYHOUSEYOURHOUSE in 25 words or less?
G: Club track for the dirtiest underground spot in your city. Or a rick owens runway.
What themes/direction did you take from a writing/production standpoint with MYHOUSEYOURHOUSE?
G: Digital surveillance, dead space, penthouse views, glu, friday the 13th.
Did you have a creative vision in mind for how you wanted to roll out the Visuals/Images for this release when making the song?
G: I had this image in my head of the 3 TVs for since we made the shit. I called Punch to see what he thought and he said he’d had the same idea for ages too so we just made it. It just fit. I just wanted the shit to feel like some cyberpunk surveillance footage.
Lyrically, what are you bringing to the table here?
G: Imma be real Punch came in with some real heavy lyricism, his writing is so fire bro, so I was just pretty self indulgent on the shit to balance it out. The whole aesthetic put me in that dark mood you get into when it’s 5AM and you’re coming down still tryna rave even though the shit just got stragglers. Shit feels confined, claustrophobic. It’s kinda an anti-flex I guess.
Why JSPUNCH for a feature, what can you tell me about him? How did this feature come to be?
G: We've been working on shit together for a couple years now. We found each other when we both dropped our first tapes, he had this dope daft punk sample flip that blew my mind, been fuckin with each other since. He has an insane work ethic too.
How did working with Creative Director Ashley Cooper come to be, and how was that process to bring this creative vision to life
G: Was lit, usually when i come up with concepts, the final product will be dumbed and diluted down for practicality and become something way different to what it started as. That shit can be cool, but with Ash, the shit turned out exactly how I had it in my head. It was weird to give over some of that control of your vision and see it executed so perfectly, mad respect.
How was it working with Billy Zammit who shot the photos for this project?
G: Yeah Billy’s a pro, man was working on no sleep with a strained budget and we got the shit done ahead of schedule without having to compromise nothin. Legend
The music video is trippy, why was it edited in the way it was, and did you get the result in the end?
G: I don’t really know it’s all pretty stream of consciousness. Usually if you get good footage the edit will be good too.
How would you describe this sound to somebody that clearly has never heard your music before?
G: Something you’d hear on a Rick Owens runway
I caught a lot of Crystal Castles meets Prodigy vibes from this track, i’m sure that’s way off what you had in mind, but what are some of your influences for making music?
G: I fuck with both, they’re both distinctly their own. Growing up the dirty rave production and energy of the prodigy influenced me heaps. I was at one of Keith Flint's last shows. My influences are pretty vast, but I’m always looking for shit that doesn’t sound or look like anything else. I listen to a lot of ambient music, and experimental beats. It’s been said but everything is so oversaturated and the shitty thing is most people accepted, but I think they’re getting tired of it. It pushes people to really innovate to cut through. There’s a space forming, it’s been a minute since someone has just changed the music landscape and i’m excited for that shit to happen again because it will, would much rather listen to some messy shit that tries something new than a pristine track churned out of the industry factory.
What artists from your SUBCULTURE in your home city are you most excited for, and who would be the most similar to you?
G: Not like me but Skeez is fuckin underrated everyone need to get around him. Kilter mixed this shit, his shit is fat. Not from my city but Randy Thrills is dope. I wanna make some shit with him.
What's the plan for the rest of 2023?
G: I acted in a movie called Sunflower that’s coming out soon, heaps more music, I might drop an album then move to Bouvet Island.
