An Interview with Garage Noise, about their new single “Edgewood Drive”

Australian pop-punk band Garage Noise is excited to announce the release of their latest single, "Edgewood Drive," a guitar-driven anthem that captures the essence of youthful nostalgia and heartache. The single marks a significant milestone for the band as they gear up for the release of their upcoming EP set to drop in early November.

"Edgewood Drive" showcases the band's signature sound—a harmonious blend of energetic instrumentals and emotionally resonant lyrics. The song delves into the universal theme of grappling with the aftermath of a profound love and explores the challenge of moving on when someone has been an integral part of one's life. Drawing inspiration from their own experiences, the song is a tribute to the central role that certain places hold in shaping memories and relationships.

Produced, recorded, and mixed by the talented Connor Massey, the track embodies a fusion of pop-punk influences ranging from Modern Baseball and Blink-182 to Fall Out Boy. Garage Noise has expertly crafted a song that's both infectiously catchy and deeply relatable, leaving listeners craving more.

"The title ‘Edgewood Drive' holds a special significance for us, as it references a street in Stanhope Gardens where we grew up and went to school. This song represents a pivotal moment in our musical journey, capturing the evolution of our sound," shared the band members.

Garage Noise's vibrant live performances have earned them a dedicated fan base, and they are excited to showcase "Edgewood Drive" in an upcoming gig at Lazybones Lounge on Thursday, October 5th, alongside The Tin Heads and The Polymics. The single release precedes their upcoming EP, which promises to further showcase the band's growth and artistry. With an unwavering commitment to their craft, Garage Noise is poised to take the music scene by storm, solidifying their status as the next big thing in Australian music

We had a quick chat with Garage Noise about their new single ‘Edgewood Drive’ a few days ago!

If you could describe Garage Noise’s sound in 3 words, what would they be?

Angsty, Energetic, Diverse

Who does Garage Noise draw its inspiration from?

We’re heavily inspired by a huge range of bands. All four of us have really different listening habits, and this is what gives us such a diverse sound. Some of our biggest inspirations in general, and particularly for ‘Edgewood Drive’ were Blink-182, Modern Baseball, Fall Out Boy, and 5 Seconds of Summer. Each of these bands are part of such different genres and we’ve been able to really fuse these into ours.

When writing “Edgewood Drive”, did the instrumental or the lyrics and melody come first?

This was one of the rare occasions where the lyrics and melody came to us first. Zac said “I was in Adelaide driving along their main road [South Road] when I was inspired by my memories of a past relationship, and the downfall of it. But from there I turned it into a song about all the good things that came from it, especially in the line “the light that you once gave to my life.”” Sam then came up with the melody when Zac brought the finished lyrics to us, and his punchy vocal line really conveys the angst behind it.

What is your latest release “Edgewood Drive” about?

Edgewood Drive is about the breaking point of a relationship because of how toxic it has become, whilst still holding onto all the good things in your life that have come to you because of it. Collectively, we love the line “is a light that you once gave to my life” because we all have felt in our lives that there are people who have come and gone and left a huge impact on us.

“Edgewood Drive” draws inspiration from some of the band’s personal experiences. If you are comfortable, could you elaborate on which situations contributed the most to the making of this song?

Zac said that when writing ‘Edgewood Drive’, he was reminiscing about a girl that he had a relationship with, that unfortunately ended quite badly. This story created a backbone for the rest of the lyrics to flow from, it allowed us to discuss how there was a flow on effect to the relationships that this scorned person had with all the other people in their lives. Sam, Bella, and Flynn, were able to assign their own meanings to the lyrics, and create an angsty instrumental section, that enhances the idea of the break down of a relationship, and sonically display a frustration with everything that can go wrong in all types of relationships.

What does the name of your song, “Edgewood Drive”, mean to you? What was your experience like recording “Edgewood Drive” in the studio?

Edgewood Drive is a street near where we all grew up and went to school, and Zac particularly used to go there to reflect on life and clear his mind. When we went to the studio to record it, we worked with our producer Connor Massey (Deadshowws) who had some great ideas on how to build on what we already had, and just get this bigger sound. Sam said “that it was a surreal experience, it took us from being just a small band that rehearses in a bedroom, to making us realise that we could really turn into something big.” Zac said “That being able to make Edgewood Drive have a bigger sound really helped him convey the meaning of the song and let people relate to the meaning of the song.” Bella said “It was an insanely once in a lifetime experience that made me so grateful for Massey reaching out to us, and being able to work with these three boys who are so extremely talented.” Flynn said “recording Edgewood Drive was fantastic! Edgewood was the first time we got to do a song in the studio and is one of my favourites to play at shows. We got an amazing sound of it too from having Massey setup literally 18 mics in the room just on the drum kit; it was incredible.”

Garage Noise is well-known for its vibrant performances. Is there anything specifically you do to prepare yourself for a gig or event?

We travel together to the gigs to psych ourselves up and always make sure that we have a shared meal beforehand. Bella said “we find it super important to hang out together cause it helps us get in the mindset of working together to put on an amazing show.” The boys love to drink Honey Lemon Tea for their vocals, so that has become a bit of a ritual for us all.

Does Garage Noise have any projects in store for the future?

Yes! We are releasing an EP towards the end of the year, and Edgewood Drive is a featured track on that. We’re super excited to put that out because it’s a full body of work that we’re really really proud of and can’t wait to share with everyone.
