SIXTH AVENUE x SUBCULTURE?
Hey Guys, How are you?
SA: Good man! We are VERY ready and excited to have this collection of songs out there in the world; they’re burning a hole in our pockets.
Who do we have talking with us today?
SA: Kenji (lead guitar) and Joel (vocals, rhythm guitars). We’ll take turns!
What were your influencers for putting this record together?
SA: Joel here first. This EP captures the wide range of our influences pretty extensively, all the way from heavy shoegaze bands like Loathe and Deftones to early 2000s Blink. It’s a mirage of inspiration from each member of our band but ultimately we’ve landed on something that feels natural and hopefully has a little bit fitted for everyone.
Who did you record with, and who mixed this record?
SA (Kenji): we recorded and mixed the EP with Matthew Templeman at Hopping mouse studios, big shout-out to PPHP!
How was your recent single launch for 23, the first single off ‘readmymind.’?
SA (Kenji) The launch was incredible, it was the most ambitious show we’ve played as it was the biggest room we’ve ever headlined, and was met by a reception greater than we could’ve imagined. I was personally sh*tting bricks in the lead up, but when everyone began singing the words to the new track only a week after it was released, it was an incredible feeling.
What is the story behind ‘readmymind.’?
SA: The EP isn’t quite as coherent to be a so called ‘concept record’ but there’s definitely a ton of common threads between the songs, as it dives into themes of grapelling with loss, self-doubt and destructive habits which I was experiencing at the time and are pretty prevalent lyrically throughout the album - it definitely gets pretty sad boy anthem at times. That being said we’ve also tried to keep it fun and an enjoyable listen, and hopefully that’s come across as well.
What's next for Sixth Avenue, post EP release?
SA: More music! Expect some more singles in the pipeline over the next year or two, also we’ll be playing a ton of shows in WA and interstate soon!
What are you listening to right now?
SA: Right now we’re bumping a ton of the new Fontaines D.C. album. You’re always talking about the boys in the better landdddd.
Are there any bands from the WA scene we should be across?
SA: yes! There’s a ton of incredible punk / grunge acts coming out at the moment: incredibly hard to name just a few check out Late 90s, Star Arcana, Paint!
Any final words
Make 2007 great again!
