Exploring Kilter's Neighbourhood: A Day in Leichhardt

On a sunny June 9th, the SUBCULTURE? team embarked on a journey to Sydney, eager to meet up with the talented electronic music producer, Kilter, also known as Ned East. Our mission was to delve into his vibrant neighborhood of Leichhardt and capture the essence of his upcoming release, "PPLR," slated for June 29th.

Accompanied by our Creative Director, Ashley Cooper, we were prepared to document Ned's local community through captivating film photography.

After an enjoyable two-hour drive, we rendezvoused with Ned at his beloved Neighbourhood Bodega Supermarket. We couldn't resist indulging in their classic Italian sandwiches, paired perfectly with a refreshing three-pack of Peroni Reds. Every bite was pure bliss, and our taste buds rejoiced. The simple pleasures in life truly make the greatest memories.

With our appetites satisfied, we embarked on a stroll to Ned's favorite local record store, "Crosstalk Records," situated just off the bustling main strip. As we entered, the walls adorned with MF Doom 12" vinyl caught our attention, immediately immersing us in the store's eclectic atmosphere. The selection of analog stereo speakers was awe-inspiring, offering a haven for enthusiasts of 90s hip-hop, electronic beats, and emo/indie records. Music lovers, take note – this gem is a must-visit.

Eager to explore more of Ned's world, we hopped back into the car and headed towards Five Dock, where Ned and his partner, Nicole (aka Nicole Millar), share a recording suite. It was an intimate space where they nurtured their creative visions and crafted remarkable music. The walk-through and catch-up session provided us with a glimpse into Ned's latest productions, leaving us even more excited for the forthcoming release.

Around 3 pm, we decided to unwind and treat ourselves to a visit to Akasha Brewing Company. Sipping on their delightful assortment of sour beers and lagers, we reveled in the flavors and relaxed atmosphere. As the conversation flowed effortlessly, we knew this day was shaping up to be something truly special.

With the golden afternoon light painting the surroundings, we embarked on a series of 35mm film photo shoots in the area. These captivating shots would soon become the visual centerpiece for the press editorial imagery accompanying the release of "PPLR." The combination of Ned's music and the enchanting visuals captured the spirit of Leichhardt and showcased the diverse beauty of his neighborhood.

As the day drew to a close, our hearts were filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience a day in the life of Kilter. Sydney had treated us to unforgettable moments, each infused with the vibrant energy that shaped Ned's creative journey. We left Leichhardt with a newfound appreciation for the power of community, music, and the artistry that brings them together. The release of "PPLR" would undoubtedly be a testament to the soulful connection between an artist and their surroundings, and we couldn't wait to witness it all unfold on June 29th.

“This track was kicked off in a writing session with Tasker and Ben in Sydney. Tasker and I were jamming with guitars and synths while Ben sat on a drum kit in the corner with a battered tape recorder in his hand. The sample at the start of the song (and throughout) is Ben searching for melodies and lyrics while we mess around.

I took the ideas home and chopped up some of the guitar chords to create the riff and then made some major transformations in the drums and synths.

The icing on the cake is a little piece of vocals from Doolie who had sent me some acapellas to play around with.” -- Kilter (Ned East)

While we where out, we caught up with Ned (Kilter) briefly to ask him a few-questions about the upcoming release for our readers!

Hey Ned, How are you today?
N: I’m good, enjoying the sun 🌞

What have you been up to lately?
N: I just got back a quick trip to Melbourne. I was helping Nicole Millar out with a show but mostly just eating and drinking.

With PPLR coming out in a number of days, what can we expect?
N: Well you can expect that song. And you can expect a little more of the choppy, hypnotic, beatsy ideas I’ve been exploring recently.

You collaborated with some great artists on this one, How did that come about?
N: This track kicked off in a writing session with Tasker and Ben (Ivan Ooze) in Sydney. Tasker and I were jamming with guitars and synths while Ben sat on a drum kit in the corner with a battered tape recorder in his hand. The sample at the start of the song (and throughout) is Ben searching for melodies and lyrics while we messed around.

I took the ideas home and chopped up some of the guitar chords to create the riff and then made some major transformations in the drums and synths. The icing on the cake is a little piece of vocals from Doolie who had sent me some acapellas to play around with.

What's the greater plan for the year? Are you working on a project?
N: There’s going to be a much more consistent drop of tracks over the next two months!

What are you looking forward to?
N: I’m looking forward to a productive winter.

Tell us about your new studio in Sydney?
N: Yeah, I just moved into a new room. I haven’t had my own proper space in a minute so it’s been really fun getting everything set up, working out new ways to use my gear and having a place to create.

What else are you working on (outside of Kilter), re-Prod/Mixing?
N: There’s been a few people come through the studio which has been great and I’ve been making a bunch of different stuff that could potentially fall outside of Kilter.

What are the go-to's in your Neighbourhood?
N: Lucchitti N&T or Raineri's for deli sandwhiches followed by Otis for wines.

Where do you forese electronic music in Australia heading?
N: Imagine if the BPMs went even faster?

Where do you get inspiration from with your productions atm?
N: I’ve been enjoying sampling again, revisiting old ideas and flipping things that I had gotten stuck on and forgotten about.

What are you listening too atm?
N: Ben Hauke, Vieux Farka Touré and Khruangbin ‘Ali’, Groove Armada ‘Vertigo’

Any last words?
N: Thank you

PPLR is available everywhere on June 29th
