Memphis LK - ‘Say’ via DotDash Recordings/Remote Control
Australian now, London-based DJ, producer, and singer Memphis LK amps up the energy with her latest EP Say. This five-track release, featuring collaborations with Australian trailblazers DJ BORING and Willaris. K, takes listeners on a Lo-Fi tasteful journey
Since moving from Melbourne over a year ago, Memphis LK has immersed herself in London's thriving nightlife, playing at clubs across Europe. Her DJ sets blend early 2000s trance, jungle, breaks, electro, and techno, bringing the energy of a summer spent performing at iconic venues like The Cause, Phonox, and festivals like Field Day and Way Out West.
Sharing the stage with artists like DJ Heartstring, Effy, sim0ne, Pretty Girl, Barry Can’t Swim, horsegiirL, Brutalismus 3000, and Yaeji, Memphis LK is now gearing up for tours in Australia and the UK, where she’ll be showcasing her finely honed, road-tested sound.
Since debuting as a solo artist in 2021, Memphis LK's dance-pop has won praise from major outlets like The Guardian, Pitchfork, and Notion. For her latest EP, she shifts her focus from songwriting to production, enriching her music with emotional depth and soul. This EP reflects her commitment to exploring the soulful elements of dance music, which, for her, are tied to the warmth and connection felt on the dance floor. "They're essential to the clubbing experience," she explains. "I wanted to bring that out by using my voice as an instrument and incorporating more samples, textures, and organic sounds."
Step into the vibrant world of Say, where she collaborates with Willaris K shines through the title track, driven by an infectious rhythm and bursts of joy, perfectly capturing the feel of her new sonic direction at the height of summer. Don’t Touch Me Baby, featuring DJ BORING, stands out for its bold, commanding energy. Created in just two days, the track packs a club-ready punch, delivering an anthem for those who are unapologetically themselves. "This one's for the baddies who just want to have fun," Memphis LK says. "It's all about feeling empowered and in your element."
On Prosper, gritty textures are paired with uplifting melodies, conjuring images of new blooms after a long, hard winter. The track begins with tension and struggle, but gradually transforms into a soundscape celebrating the beauty that comes with resilience. Need You Now draws inspiration from Burial, Grimes, and Overmono, offering an emotionally charged reflection on the pain of a reluctant breakup. Meanwhile, Just The Way You Are brings a dose of early 2000s nostalgia, reimagining Milky's 2002 classic with a euphoric, club-ready twist. "I wanted to keep the original's feel-good energy while adding a fresh, intentional club spin," she says.
