Quick Chat with Northern-Rivers Alt-Country Artist StayLucky About Growing Up, and John Prine

StayLucky, the burgeoning musical sensation, is causing a stir with his inaugural release, "How I Loved You Then." Drawing inspiration from vintage poetry, he enthralls his audience with a distinctive Alt Americana sound. This meticulously crafted song is a testament to StayLucky's years of dedication to his craft, resulting in a composition that exudes a serene vulnerability reminiscent of Neil Young's iconic hooks.

This release has already piqued the interest of ABC Country, which has added "How I Loved You Then" to its regular rotation. Additionally, it has received airplay from Rhinestone Cowgirl on 4ZZZ (Brisbane), FBI Radio, RTR (Perth), and Double J Radio on Tower of Songs with Henry Wagons. Following this success, StayLucky unveiled two new tracks, "Figure Me In" and "Chasing Brake lights," which garnered video rotations on CMT programming, featuring in their Alt Country, Locals Only, and New Country playlists.

In 2018, a creative surge compelled StayLucky to put pen to paper, resulting in this divine Alt Americana track that beautifully encapsulates his musical journey. "How I Loved You Then" serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication and artistic growth, flowing seamlessly like a lush river, mirroring the relationships it represents. It delves into the intricacies of human connections, breakdowns, rebirths, and the enduring elements of love and cigarettes in life.

With every debut track comes a lifetime of experiences, and "How I Loved You Then" embodies StayLucky's delicate confidence and profound musicality. Recorded and produced by Alex Markwell at Aviary Studios in Melbourne in August 2022 and masterfully mastered by Rick Snowden of Third Eye Stimuli Records, the track underscores StayLucky's commitment to delivering an extraordinary auditory experience.

Hailing from the Hinterland of The Northern Rivers, NSW, StayLucky draws inspiration from the tranquility of a serene life and well-lived experiences, which shine like diamonds throughout his music. His lyrics, like a comfortably worn coat, and his gentle vulnerability act as a lucky charm, inviting listeners into his world.

Within its verses, "How I Loved You Then" weaves a concealed narrative as StayLucky's soulful crooning guides listeners through a journey of self-discovery and the promise of exciting adventures ahead. The track possesses an undeniable charm, captivating audiences with its poetic profundity and enchanting melodies.

We caught up with Tommy Parker aka StayLucky today for a quick chat!

Who are your biggest inspirations?

John Prine, Ennio Morricone, Anthony Bourdain, Justin Vernon & Peter Carey

If you could describe your music in three words, what would they be?

Lost In Translation

What genre does StayLucky best fit into?

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Ukulele Screamo, Fallout Cowboy, PAN!C @ the Rodeo.

If I listened to your music for the first time, who would I say you sound similar to?

‘How I Loved You Then'‘ has a definite Father John Misty essence to its rhythm, ‘Figure Me In’ has a swift Whiskeytown, toe tapping, hook in and out essence to it. While ‘Chasing Brakelights’ has a slow brooding subtly from the likes of Justin Vernon and Gregory Alan Isakov. But that’s just me y’all could hear Alanais Morrisette and The Beastie Boys. It’s all subjective and to a lesser extent, relevant?

Are there any over arching themes across all your songs?

I guess there is, I like to keep a strong attachment to vulnerability. I struggle, we all do. But I feel a cathartic attachment to my words across all of my songs. Yet to write one about nothing, or have I……..

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

I’ve always loved music, it’s the only thing that hasn’t let me down in my life. And I guess in my darkest moments it’s been the only light and the only voice I’ve had. My inability to ignite the feeling it gives me through any other medium over time, is i guess why I pursue it. But here’s hoping music pursues me.

and Lastly, Who did you listen to growing up?

I listened to a lot of things, my mother played the Beatles exclusively on long car trips, I watched the monkeys television show everyday I was home sick from school. I cherished a shaggy CD until I found Jim Croce and he led me down a long winding road of folk country that took me as deep as the louvin brothers.
