How did the song idea for “Marrickville to London” come to you?

Being an absolute mess helped a lot. Broke up with my girlfriend and she said she was moving to London so it all stemmed from that.

What was the recording and song-writing process like for this song?

We recorded it live and loud. Kept the energy high and kept pumping it out till we were happy. Tristan is a human click track so we did it raw.

“Marrickville to London” came to you from a dream. Have any other songs you’ve released been the same or is this unique to “Marrickville to London”?

I wish, usually my dreams are full of nightmares so it was good to get something useful out of one.

Are there any overarching themes across your music?

I find it hard to make stuff up so the songs are all about real life. I try to broaden the ideas a bit so everyone can relate and take something positive from them.

If I were to listen to your music for the first time, who do you think I would say PINKY RING sounds similar to?

A Lot of blokes at work say it sounds like Paul Kelly so maybe that. I love Rodriguez, DMAS, Oasis and a lot of other stuff so I'm sure it all rubs off into the songs.

Why did you choose to pursue a music career?

To replicate the feeling I got from listening to music. Making songs and giving other people that feeling is the best reward you can get as a songwriter .

Do you ever get “writer’s block”, and if so, what are your ways to combat it?

I don't try force it, if a song is there it will come through. But you've still gotta be there with your fishing pole in the water waiting for a bite.

PINKY RING plays with a live band during their shows. Does the live band contribute any ideas or inspirations to any of your upcoming releases?

Not really in the beginning, I feel like when writing with a whole band there's too many cooks in the kitchen. I like to start with an idea, let the lyrics come through even if I only play one or 2 notes. Then if I can't piece it together I'll get some help from friends. Then once it's done the band makes it a real song

CATCH PINKY RING at their upcoming shows:
